Blog Post 4: PARCC Testing and Common Core
After reading the four articles provided to us on the PARCC exam and the Common Core Standards, you must be thinking about how you are feeling about the implementation of both, as they are such hot issues for educators. Many would argue that not only are the Common Core and PARCC advanced beyond realistic expectations for our students, but that they are also contributing to a loss of interest in learning. Based on your readings, what are your thoughts on this way of thinking?

ReplyDeleteNot only is this way of thinking accurate, but it is also MY thinking and opinion of the PARCC and Common Core Standards. I believe that this standardized test and these standards are WAY too advanced for our students for the simple fact that they haven't learned the "requirements" from the previous grade before the NJCCS were incorporated. In the end, these standards and this test does a disservice to the children who we are supposed to be servicing. I believe people who do not have any experience in the classroom created these standards which is really unfortunate. I am not a fan of either but I will do my best to ALWAYS make learning fun, exciting and most importantly rewarding.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Frankie that the expectations of this exam seem far too high for students to be expected to meet let alone be eager to complete. One article even tells us that the exam should take 8 hours to administer and take. That is ludicrous to me to think about taking a test for that long. I agree with Frankie again that I always want my students to feel good about learning, I never want to make a student feel as though they need to be "taught to test" and that a good grade equals being smart. I believe that experiencing and absorbing information in a welcoming environment is real learning; students will take this PARCC and only think of it as a nightmare they're glad to be done with rather than something they learned from.
